In the wake of the recently concluded 108th Canton Fair's Phase II Knitting Exhibition, it was revealed that Pubei County in Guangxi Province has captured significant attention from international buyers with its exquisite weaving crafts. Despite challenging economic conditions, including rising raw material costs and currency fluctuations, local weaving companies have shown strong confidence and a surge in orders. This success highlights the resilience and adaptability of the industry.
Pubei is widely recognized as the core production area for woven handicrafts in Guangxi. The county accounts for approximately 20% to 30% of the region’s total woven product exports, making it a key player in the national handicraft industry. Nestled within the mountainous region of Guangxi, Pubei leverages its rich natural resources such as rattan, bamboo, and leaves to create eco-friendly, elegant, and high-quality products. These items are highly sought after by consumers worldwide for their environmental benefits and craftsmanship.
With over 62,000 farmers engaged in the weaving sector, the industry plays a vital role in the local economy. From January to April 2010 alone, the output value reached an impressive 114 million yuan. Products from Pubei are now exported to more than 20 countries, including the U.S., France, and Japan, demonstrating the growing global appeal of these traditional crafts.
To support this thriving industry, the Pubei County Commerce Bureau has implemented targeted strategies to help local enterprises expand their export operations. First, they have focused on boosting confidence in foreign trade by providing policy guidance and assistance with project submissions. In 2024, all foreign trade enterprises in the county received 816,000 yuan in funding to support international market development.
Second, the bureau has strengthened its role as a bridge between businesses and industry associations. It has organized participation in major events like the Canton Fair, offered training sessions on e-commerce marketing, and facilitated export credit seminars. Additionally, the Qinzhou Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau has conducted quality management workshops to improve product standards and ensure compliance with international regulations.
Third, the bureau encourages companies to adapt to shifting global market demands. Enterprises are encouraged to innovate, optimize their products, and invest in technology to increase value and competitiveness. For example, one local factory, Yinxiang Craft Factory, has successfully introduced new products using iron wire and recycled materials, creating affordable yet stylish items that appeal to a wide range of international buyers.
Thanks to these proactive policies and the dedication of local enterprises, Pubei has exceeded its foreign trade export targets three months ahead of schedule. The county’s weaving crafts are no longer just a local treasure—they are becoming a global phenomenon, capturing the attention of markets around the world.
