Bangladesh is currently in the peak of its jute harvest season, marking a promising period for farmers and the local economy. This year, the country has set a target of planting 139,000 hectares of jute, and the actual area has already reached 19.98 hectares—an impressive 44% increase compared to previous years. Over 420,000 hemp farmers are expected to produce approximately 2.2 million bales this season, which is 49% higher than the initial projections.
The surge in production has led to increased demand, causing a rise in the price of raw jute. The local market price for one Ma Maland (a bundle weighing 40 kilograms) has gone up from 1,600 taka a month ago to 2,200 taka (around $31), reflecting the growing value of the crop. To support farmers and boost their income, the government has introduced a new initiative: offering free fiber separation services in key producing areas. This move is expected to reduce costs and improve efficiency for small-scale growers.
In addition, recent government investments in upgrading jute factories have further boosted farmer confidence. These efforts not only enhance the quality of the final product but also open up better market opportunities for Bangladeshi jute both domestically and internationally. With these developments, the sector is on track for sustained growth, benefiting millions of people who rely on jute farming for their livelihoods.
