Rising raw materials push pet apparel prices up

This year, as cotton prices continue to surge, the ex-factory prices of domestic garment manufacturers have also seen a significant upward trend. From cotton and down jackets to pet clothing, almost all products are experiencing price hikes. In fact, some pet clothing brands have reported a 30% to 50% increase in their factory prices. According to our investigation into the market, the reasons behind this trend are consistent across different sources. At Chengdu Jintang Pet Garment Factory, the owner explained that this year’s pet clothing production has been affected by rising fabric costs, especially for knitted materials. At the start of the year, 23 kilograms of knit fabric were priced at around 23 yuan per kilogram, but by mid-year, the price had jumped to 36 yuan per kilogram—nearly a two-thirds increase in just six months. This sharp rise has made it difficult for many textile companies to plan production, with some even choosing to scale back or delay orders. We also spoke with a chemical fiber cotton producer, who revealed that rising oil prices have led to frequent adjustments in upstream suppliers' quotations. Some companies now update their prices daily, and in some cases, prices can fluctuate multiple times in a single day. As a downstream company, they are constantly dealing with the ripple effects caused by these upstream changes. During a visit to the Lotus Pond Fabric Wholesale Market in Chengdu, we observed several fabric wholesalers playing mahjong together. According to them, this time of year used to be the peak season for fabric sales, but this year, the rapid price increases have significantly slowed down demand. Previously, hundreds of thousands of fabrics could be sold in a single day, but now, many days pass with only a few hundred units sold. “In previous years, many clothing manufacturers would buy dozens of pieces at a time when prices were lower. Now, most only take a few pieces, and it's normal to walk away empty-handed,” one wholesaler said. According to an official from the China Pet Opportunities Network Marketing Department, data shows that the overall wholesale price of pet clothing has increased by more than 30% compared to last year. Most pet clothing is produced by finished product manufacturers, and the cost increases come from both higher labor wages and raw material prices. Labor costs have risen by over 20%, and since labor accounts for about one-third of total manufacturing costs, this has added up quickly. Additionally, cotton-based padded garments have seen even steeper price hikes. On top of that, pet clothing exports have also surged this year. Many companies are focusing more on foreign trade orders, which offer better profit margins than domestic sales. As a result, some businesses have shifted their attention away from the local market altogether. Despite the growing popularity of pet clothing as an emerging industry, manufacturers must not overlook the importance of quality. While the industry is booming and profits are high, long-term success still depends on maintaining standards and customer trust. Many companies are increasing production and even working overtime to meet rising demand, but balancing growth with quality remains crucial for sustainable business.
