Ashley and Emily, the talented duo from Frances Suzanne, are back with us today. These sisters are known for crafting adorable outfits for their youngest sister's three little girls. During their last visit, they shared their experiences customizing the Croquet Dress. This time around, they're diving into one of their absolute favorite patterns.
Hello, dear fans, supporters, and fellow sewists of Oliver + S! When asked to pick our favorite pattern from the collection, the brainstorming began, and a list was quickly compiled. But honestly, narrowing it down to just one? That felt nearly impossible. So, we took a trip down memory lane, revisiting the Oliver + S gallery to see which design truly stood out as our favorite.
Turns out, we’re not strangers to overthinking things, and this exercise revealed some fascinating insights about our deep affection for these patterns. We first encountered Oliver + S designs three years ago during a visit to our mentor, and they instantly won our hearts! It wasn’t until a few months later that we finally tried our hand at sewing one—starting with the Class Picnic Blouse. Fast forward to today, and we now own 32 patterns (excluding Little Things to Sew). In the past couple of years alone, we've managed to sew 29 of them in various forms and styles. There’s still plenty left in our stash waiting to come alive!
After much deliberation, our undecided selves finally settled on... drumroll, please... the Puppet Show Dress, Tunic, and Shorts.

Now, let’s talk about something we’ve always teased other sewists for: scoffing at those who repeatedly sew the same pattern over and over again. Honestly, who sews a single pattern 10 times—or even 20 times?! Our usual mindset was, “With so many incredible patterns out there, why would anyone choose to sew the same one repeatedly?â€
Well, here we are, hanging our heads in shame because, unbeknownst to us, we had quietly become repeat offenders when it came to the Puppet Show Dress, Tunic, and Shorts.

To date, we’ve sewn some variation of the Puppet Show Dress, Tunic, and Shorts nine times: four dresses, three tunic-and-shorts combinations, and two pairs of standalone shorts. Clearly, we adore this pattern. But the real question is, why do we love it so much?
1. **Variety:** One of the best things about this pattern is the sheer versatility it offers. You can sew a dress, a tunic, or even some cute shorts. And if you’re feeling adventurous, mix and match different elements to create something entirely unique!
2. **Attention to Detail:** This pattern shines with its subtle yet sophisticated finishing touches. From gathers and cuffs to darts and curved yokes, every detail adds elegance without overpowering the overall aesthetic. Plus, the Peter Pan collar and hem facing provide endless opportunities for creativity—like adding piping, which happens to be our go-to embellishment.
3. **Skill-Building Opportunities:** Each time we sew this pattern, we learn something new. The instructions walk you through a variety of techniques, helping refine your skills step by step. For instance, this might have been the first time we mastered hem facings properly (#slowlearners). Every project feels like a small victory!
4. **Adorable Shorts:** Let’s face it—the shorts are absolutely darling. Their petite charm makes them perfect for younger girls, especially since this pattern tops out at size 5. We couldn’t resist creating another ensemble featuring the Puppet Show Shorts paired with another Oliver + S design. You can check out that look on our blog—it’s definitely worth a peek!

Inspired by this recent creation, we incorporated Liberty fabric as an accent piece, and boy, did it spark joy! While our wallets may not agree with our newfound obsession, there’s no denying the appeal of Liberty prints. In fact, we’ve already earmarked funds for a few more pieces in the near future. Call it the “Liberty Bug,†but we’re hooked!
Looking ahead, we haven’t yet ventured into winterizing the shorts. So, come fall/winter, we aim to round out our collection of Puppet Show creations to an even ten by sewing a pair. The challenge now lies in choosing the right companion pattern. Any suggestions? If you were tasked with pairing a winterized version of these shorts with another pattern, what would you select, and how would you style them?
That’s all for now, but stay tuned for more updates from Frances Suzanne!
