aimee’s noord sweatshirt

Aimee from the Advisors Circle recently shared her experience creating a fun version of the Noord T-Shirt and Sweatshirt pattern, and she’s here today to talk about it. I’ve always been a fan of great sweatshirts, so when the Noord Sweatshirt pattern landed on my radar, I knew I had to give it a shot. What caught my eye was the unique horizontal yoke across the front—it’s such a distinctive feature. The added side panels really set this pattern apart, making each version completely different. Honestly, you could make this pattern over and over again, and no two garments would ever look alike. Last year, I bought a grab-box of knit fabrics online for another project, and I got lucky—there was more knit yardage than scraps. Most of the larger pieces are gone now, but I still had a few smaller bits left. I thought the Noord would be the perfect opportunity to use some of these pieces. The biggest piece I had left was this beautiful organic knit featuring jackalopes, paired with a coordinating red fabric. Initially, I wasn’t sure which one to use for the yoke, but the yardage decided for me—I had more of the print than the solid color. I usually use a serger for knits, but this pattern can easily be assembled using just a straight stitch on a regular sewing machine. Although the pattern seems complex, it’s actually quite straightforward, even for beginners. Liesl + Co. patterns always impress me, especially the attention to detail in the finishing. The facing at the bottom hem gives this sweatshirt a polished look both inside and out. The fit of this sweatshirt was spot-on. I’m 5’6” and petite, so I sewed a size Medium with an A/B cup. Normally, on other sweatshirt patterns, I’d have to shorten the sleeves because of my shorter arms, but this one fit perfectly! I was thrilled when I tried it on after sewing the sleeves (before adding the cuffs) and realized the cuffs wouldn’t reach my fingertips. This pattern is surprisingly fast to sew. Despite all the pieces, it comes together smoothly, and the instructions are always clear and well-written. Every time I sew a Liesl + Co. or Oliver + S pattern, I learn something new, whether it’s a new technique or a better way to finish a garment. My only critique is the number of seams in the sleeves. I’m a bit sensitive to the feel of seam lines on the inside of my clothes, and after making this one, I noticed there were four seam lines inside each arm. I haven’t mastered French seams yet, but I wonder if they might help reduce the discomfort. All in all, I highly recommend this pattern. It’s fantastic for using up knit scraps, and the design possibilities are endless. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced sewer, the Noord is a great project to dive into. As I wrapped up this project, I couldn’t help but think about how versatile the Noord pattern is. It’s a pattern that encourages creativity, allowing you to experiment with different fabrics and colors. The horizontal yoke adds a playful touch, while the side panels keep things interesting. I’m already thinking about my next version! If you’re looking for a knit pattern that’s both functional and stylish, the Noord is a winner. It’s not just about the final product—it’s about the journey of sewing something unique and personal. If you’re on the fence, don’t hesitate. Dive into the Noord and see where your creativity takes you!
