I must admit, when I first saw the stunning collection of Maritime Knit Tops that Susanne shared on Instagram, I was absolutely blown away. Honestly, it’s hard not to be impressed by such a beautiful handmade wardrobe staple pattern. So, when Masha asked me if I’d be interested in writing about my favorite Liesl + Co. pattern, it didn’t take long to decide—Susanne’s choice was obvious!
Hi there,
My name is Susanne, and I’m thrilled to share a bit about my experience with sewing and my absolute favorite Liesl + Co. pattern. I hail from Germany and have been happily married for over four decades now, living in a quaint little town near the North Sea. Family has always been at the heart of everything for me. I’m blessed with two wonderful sons, one fantastic daughter, their spouses, and six delightful grandchildren (four girls and two boys).
Besides being a proud grandma, I’m also a retired architect with a passion for creativity. My hobbies include knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, and embroidery, among others. Creativity is something that’s always brought me immense joy and peace, especially during challenging times.
When I first started sewing as a child, it was out of necessity rather than choice. Back then, I often had to wear hand-me-downs from my older sister and cousins, and frankly, they didn’t suit my style. I longed for clothing that felt unique and flattering. That’s when I decided to learn how to sew at the tender age of 11 or 12, using my mom’s old Singer machine. Though it was manual and could only do a straight stitch, it worked wonders for me.
Today, I sew not only because I dislike fast fashion but also because creating my own wardrobe allows me to express myself authentically. There’s something incredibly satisfying about wearing something you’ve crafted yourself.
Let’s talk about my favorite Liesl + Co. pattern—the Maritime Knit Top. This top has quickly become a staple in my wardrobe, and I’ve already made eight versions of it! What draws me to this pattern is its versatility and simplicity. Liesl + Co. patterns are known for being well-drafted, and this one is no exception. The instructions are clear and beginner-friendly, even for someone like me who speaks limited English. Plus, the finished product always looks professional without being overly complicated.
One of the things I love most about this pattern is how it caters to different body types. For instance, I’m what you might call a “column†figure—5’7â€, not very curvy, with minimal waist definition, broad shoulders, and long, lean arms. I don’t go for overly romantic styles; instead, I prefer clean, straightforward designs. The Maritime Knit Top checks all those boxes for me.
The neckline is another highlight—it’s a boat-neck design that’s neither too revealing nor too tight. Most of my versions have used the neck facing included in the pattern, but I’ve also tried a regular neck binding, and both options work beautifully. By experimenting with sleeve lengths, body shapes, and vent placements, you can completely transform the look of the top.
Sewing the Maritime Knit Top is surprisingly easy, and it doesn’t require a ton of fabric. I manage everything on my regular sewing machine since I don’t own a serger or coverstitch machine. This pattern pairs wonderfully with casual pants, whether they’re wide-legged or slim-fit, as well as skirts—both narrow and full. Depending on the fabric, it can easily transition from casual to semi-formal occasions. I typically opt for cotton knits, but the version featuring dragonflies is made from viscose/rayon.
If you’re ever stuck trying to figure out what to do with a particular piece of fabric in your stash, give the Maritime Knit Top a shot! It truly feels like this pattern was designed specifically for my body type and lifestyle.
Creativity has always been my sanctuary, offering solace and happiness, especially during tough times. I hope you find some moments to nurture your own creative side too!
Until next time,
Susanne
