We were absolutely blown away by the stunning collection of Maritime Knit Tops that Susanne shared on Instagram. Honestly, when we think of a handmade wardrobe essential, this pattern immediately comes to mind! When we asked her to share her thoughts on her favorite Liesl + Co. pattern, it was no shocker that she picked this one.
Hi there!
My name is Susanne. Masha asked me to talk about my go-to Liesl + Co. pattern, and I’m thrilled to do so!
I hail from Germany and have been living with my husband for over four decades in a quaint little town close to the North Sea. Family means everything to me—my two sons, one daughter, two daughters-in-law, one son-in-law, and six delightful grandchildren (four girls and two boys) keep my world vibrant.
I’ve always been a creative soul. Professionally, I was an architect before retiring, and now I channel my creativity into knitting, crocheting, sewing, quilting, embroidery, and more. Crafting brings me immense joy and allows me to express myself uniquely.
When I first began sewing as a child, I was inspired by a desire for clothing that flattered me better than the hand-me-downs I received from my older sister and cousins. Starting at 11 or 12, I taught myself on my mom’s old Singer machine—a manual model with only a straight stitch. Over the years, my passion for sewing has grown stronger, especially since embracing the concept of slow fashion. Sewing my own clothes lets me showcase my personal style far better than ready-to-wear pieces ever could.

Now, let’s dive into my absolute favorite Liesl + Co. pattern: the Maritime Knit Top.
There are countless reasons why I adore this pattern. First off, Liesl’s patterns consistently impress me—they’re meticulously drafted, come with clear instructions, and are beginner-friendly despite some language barriers (I’m not the strongest in English). Despite their simplicity, these patterns produce garments with a polished, professional finish.
One of the things I enjoy most about Liesl’s designs is how they challenge me to learn new techniques. For instance, choosing the right pattern involves understanding your body type. I describe myself as a “columnar†figure: 5’7â€, not particularly curvy, with minimal waist definition, broad shoulders, and long, slender arms. My style leans toward clean, straightforward lines, and the Maritime Top aligns beautifully with my aesthetic preferences.
I’ve already crafted eight Maritime Knit Tops, and I plan on making even more! The neckline is a standout feature—it’s a boat neck that strikes the perfect balance, never revealing bra straps. Most of my versions include the neck facing from the pattern, but a regular neck binding works equally well. By experimenting with sleeve lengths, body shapes, and vent placements, you can create a variety of styles.

This top is incredibly user-friendly, requiring minimal fabric and manageable sewing skills. I’ve completed all my Maritime Tops using a regular sewing machine, without needing a serger or coverstitch machine. It’s accessible for everyone!
The Maritime Top pairs wonderfully with casual pants, whether wide-leg or slim-fit, as well as skirts—both narrow and full. Depending on the fabric, it can easily transition from casual to formal wear. I tend to opt for cotton knits, though the version featuring dragonflies uses a viscose/rayon blend.
If you're staring at a piece of fabric in your stash and wondering what to do with it, give the Maritime Knit Top a shot! This pattern feels tailor-made for my body type and lifestyle.
Creativity fills my heart with calmness and happiness, offering solace during tough times. I hope you find moments of peace and fulfillment through crafting as well!

Life gets busy, but finding time to explore your creative side is worth every moment. Sewing has enriched my life in ways I never imagined, and I hope it does the same for you!
