Ashley and Emily from Frances Suzanne are back today, visiting once again. They're the two sisters who sew clothes for their youngest sister's three daughters. The last time they visited, they shared their experience customizing the Croquet Dress. This time, they’re talking about one of their absolute favorite patterns.
Hello, Oliver + S enthusiasts, supporters, and fellow sewists! When we were asked to pick our favorite Oliver + S pattern, we had quite the brainstorming session. We even made a list, but honestly, how could we possibly choose just one? To help narrow it down, we revisited our Oliver + S gallery to see which pattern really stood out to us as our favorite.
We tend to overthink things like this, and during our reflection, we uncovered some fascinating insights about why we adore Oliver + S patterns so much. We first encountered these patterns three years ago when visiting our mentor, and immediately fell head over heels for them! It wasn't until several months later that we actually tried sewing one ourselves—a Class Picnic Blouse. Nowadays, we own 32 patterns (excluding Little Things to Sew) and have managed to sew 29 of them in various forms over the past two years. There are still a few left in our stash waiting to be sewn!
In the end, despite our indecision, we finally settled on... drumroll, please... the Puppet Show Dress, Tunic, and Shorts.

Alright, we’ll admit it—we used to be those people who looked down on sewists who repeatedly sew the same pattern over and over again. Seriously, who sews the same pattern 10, 20, or more times? Our usual mindset was, "With so many amazing patterns out there, why would anyone sew the same one repeatedly?"
But guess what? We now sheepishly hang our heads in shame because, without realizing it, we've become exactly those "repeat sewists." Unbeknownst to us, the Puppet Show Dress, Tunic, and Shorts have become our go-to pattern, and we've sewn some variation of it nine times already: four dresses, three tunic-and-shorts sets, and two pairs of standalone shorts.

So clearly, we LOVE this pattern. But we had to ask ourselves: Why do we love it so much?

1. **Variety!** This pattern offers so much versatility—you can sew a dress, a tunic, or some adorable shorts. And the best part? You can mix and match these options however you'd like!
2. **Fabulous Details!** The pattern is packed with little details that blend seamlessly into the overall design. Think gathers, cuffs, darts, a curved yoke, hem facings, top-stitching, a Peter Pan collar, and endless possibilities for combining fabrics or adding piping (which happens to be our favorite touch!).

3. **Diverse Techniques!** Following the details theme, this pattern provides thorough instructions for a range of sewing techniques, helping us grow as sewists every time we tackle it. Honestly, this might have been the first time we successfully sewed a hem facing correctly! #SlowLearners

4. **And those shorts!** We can't help but swoon—they’re just too cute! These shorts give such a sweet look for younger girls, and since this pattern only goes up to size 5, we want to cherish this style while we can.
Our most recent creation was inspired by this pin. We might have developed a bit of a Liberty fabric obsession after using it as an accent fabric on the dress. If only our wallets were bigger, we’d create a "Liberty Stash" (imagine the possibilities)! In reality, we know we’ll likely splurge on more Liberty prints soon enough. We’re officially infected with the "Liberty Bug!"

Since we couldn’t resist creating more looks with this pattern, we paired the Puppet Show Shorts with another Oliver + S pattern. We shared that look on our blog earlier today—why not check it out?

Looking ahead to future versions of the Puppet Show Dress, Tunic, and Shorts, we haven’t yet sewn a "winterized" version of the shorts. So this fall/winter, we’re aiming to complete our collection of these designs with a total of ten creations, including a pair of winter shorts. The big question is—what should we pair with them? Any ideas or suggestions? What pattern would you pair with a winterized version of these shorts, and how would you style them?
