Textile Terms - Camel Hair

The camel hair used in textiles is mostly taken from bimodal camels, and the dromedary hairs are short and non-woven. The modern Bactrian camel was a crossbreeding of the early bimodal camel and dromedary. Camel hair generally do not need to shear or scratch the hair, rely on natural hair removal to collect, after washing, combing and other processes, the net hair rate is about 50%. The strength of the camel's hair is similar to that of wool of the same diameter, which is rich in luster, good in warmth, and poor in puddling. The color of the camel's hair is milky white, light yellow, brownish brown, brownish brown, etc. The fine camel hairs with fine quality are mostly light in color. The camel hairy quilt contains two types of fine hair and coarse hair. The thick long fibers constitute the outer protective hair quilt, hair up to 40 cm, known as the camel's hair. Fine and short fibers make up the inner layer of warm quilts, which are 4 to 12.7 centimeters long and 5 to 40 microns in diameter. They are known as camel hair (see photo). Camel hair is mainly composed of scales and cortical layers, some fibers and a medullary layer. The scales are about 70-90/mm and the scales have smooth edges. The cortex consists of elongated cells with regular stripes and pigments. The medullary layer of camel's velvet is relatively thin, mostly discontinuous; the medullary layer of camel's hair is continuously and narrowly distributed. Camelmere is mainly used to make high-grade coat fabrics, blankets, and carpets. Due to the low shrinkage of camel fiber flake, it is especially suitable for knitted fabrics or filling materials instead of cotton, which is light and warm and comfortable. Camel hair can be used for industrial fabrics, such as oil filter cloth and fillers.

At present, there are about 15 million peaks (heads) of camels all over the world. The annual output of camels per peak is about 2.25 kg. The largest producers of camel hair are China, Mongolia, and Afghanistan. The main consumers are the United States, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the United Kingdom.
