Christie's is set to auction a collection of art valued between £74 million and £109 million in its first major sale of 2011, featuring notable works such as Paul Gauguin’s still life painting. Despite ongoing economic uncertainties, the art market saw record-breaking results in 2010, and Christie’s hopes that the evening auction of Impressionist and contemporary art on February 9 will set another milestone.
Giovanna Bertazzoni, Christie’s Director of Auctions for Impressionism and Contemporary Art in London, highlighted that 2010 was a defining year for the art world. “The performance of this year’s auction speaks for itself,†she said. “It was driven by strong demand for rare and significant Impressionist and Modern artworks. At last year’s sale, seven of the top ten highest-selling pieces were from the Impressionist and Modern category, with six of them fetching over $50 million. This trend continues to attract both seasoned and new collectors across established and emerging markets like China and Russia.â€
The standout piece in the February 9 evening auction is Gauguin’s *Still Life and Hope (Nature Morte à l’Espérance)*, created in 1901. It is one of only four drawings the artist produced that year and features a sunflower oil painting. The artwork was displayed at the Gauguin retrospective in 1906 and has been exhibited in over 20 major museum shows since then, though it hasn’t been publicly sold since 1989.
In addition to Gauguin’s work, the auction includes four pieces from the Art Institute of Chicago, including Georges Braque’s *Nature Morte à la guitare (rideaux rouge)*, estimated at £3.5–5.5 million. The main auction lot ranges from £585 million to £81 million, while other items from the Surrealist movement, including works by René Magritte and Salvador DalÃ, are expected to fetch between £1900 and £25 million. A daytime auction on February 10 will feature more than 100 lots, with prices starting at £1500–£2200.
