Gao Geng Works to Present at Christie's 2011 Auction

Christie’s is set to present an impressive collection of art valued between £74 million and £109 million in its first major auction of 2011. Among the highlights is a still life by Paul Gauguin, a piece that has long been admired for its artistic significance. Despite ongoing concerns about the global economy, the art market saw record-breaking sales in 2010, and there's optimism that the evening auction of Impressionist and contemporary art on February 9th could achieve another milestone at Christie’s London location. Giovanna Bertazzoni, Christie’s director of auctions for Impressionism and contemporary art in London, remarked, “2010 was a landmark year for the art market. The results from this year’s auction are clear to everyone.” She added that the demand for rare and impactful works from the Impressionist and Modern periods continues to drive strong sales. At last year’s auction, seven of the top ten sold items were from the Impressionist and Modern art categories, with six of them fetching over $50 million. This trend is attracting new collectors in both established and emerging markets, such as China and Russia. The most anticipated piece in the February 9th auction is Gauguin’s *Still Life and Hope (Nature Morte à l’Espérance)*, created in 1901. It is one of only four drawings the artist produced that year, and it features a sunflower oil painting. The artwork was displayed during a Gauguin retrospective in 1906 and, although it hasn’t been publicly shown since 1989, it has appeared in over 20 major museum exhibitions. In addition to Gauguin’s work, the auction will feature four pieces from the Art Institute of Chicago, including Georges Braque’s *Nature Morte à la guitare (rideaux rouge)*, which is estimated to sell for between £3.5 million and £5.5 million. The main auction lot is expected to range from £585 million to £81 million, while other works from the Surrealist movement, including pieces by René Magritte and Salvador Dalí, are priced between £20 million and £25 million. The daytime auction on February 10 will include more than 150 items, with prices starting at £1,500 and going up to £2,200. This event offers a broader selection for collectors and enthusiasts looking to acquire fine art at various price points. Overall, the auction promises to be a significant moment in the art world, reflecting both historical importance and current market trends.
