Pakistani textile minister Makkhodoom Shahabuddin said that the main reason for the transfer of Pakistani textile industry to Bangladesh is not the insufficient supply of electricity and natural gas and the high price of electricity, but the preferential treatment given by the European Union and the United States to Dhaka.
Shahabuddin said on Monday about the situation of the textile industry in Pakistan that Bangladesh is a privileged country because Bangladesh is included in the least developed countries by the EU and the United States. Bangladesh received preferential treatment, and the textile industry in Bangladesh received financial support from big economies.
He added that this is the reason why Pakistan’s textile industry in Bangladesh has transferred to Bangladesh and that traders can take full advantage of this advantage.
According to the minister, in the past five years, over 40% of the Pakistani textile industry and about 200,000 power looms have been transferred to Bangladesh. In southern Punjab, there are more than 60,000 families living on daily wages and they find that they are now living beyond their means due to unemployment. Throughout Punjab, the lives of 200,000 families have been directly or indirectly affected.
He said that the lack of electricity prices and the supply of electricity and natural gas are not the main reasons. It is not only in Pakistan that there is an energy shortage, and the government has not imposed additional fees. This is a major challenge for the industry in South Asia.
He said that this year will reduce the power cut-off phenomenon, and then the price of electricity will be reduced according to national demand.
He said that the government will set up a tax-free zone for the textile industry in southern Punjab Province. Southern Punjab is considered to be the hub of the textile industry.
The minister said that the government is taking all measures to attract foreign investment and improve the economy, which will solve the problem of unemployment.
