In the 16 categories of industrial textiles, the share of geotextile textiles is not large, but the growth rate has been fastest in recent years. In the five years from 2006 to 2010, the average annual growth rate of geotextiles reached 35.3%, which was higher than the average annual growth rate of industrial textiles by nearly 16%. In recent years, the state has increased investment in infrastructure construction and a number of key projects have been launched. As the Three Gorges Dam, the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, and the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed rail project have been put into operation one after another, the demand for geotechnical materials is growing. In 2010, the output of geotextiles reached 405,000 tons, and it is expected to maintain a two-digit growth in the next five years. By 2015, output will reach 730,000 tons. Geosynthetics play a very important role in the construction of basic projects. In the highway construction, geotextiles are indispensable engineering materials for protecting the roadbed, adjusting the road surface, and increasing the road safety factor. In the construction of high-speed railways, geomembrane materials play a key role in ensuring the smooth running of trains. In hydraulic engineering, geogrids can protect embankments from seepage. In landfills, waterproof mats play a role in preventing the penetration of sewage. The difference from previous years is that, nowadays, with national key projects, the use of geosynthetics has become inevitable during construction.

Li Guangxin, president of the China Geosynthetics Engineering Association, said that geosynthetics have the functions of seepage prevention, drainage, filtration, protection, reinforcement and isolation, and are currently playing an irreplaceable role in water resources protection and landfill disposal. It can be said that it is the fourth building material after wood, steel and cement.

Shandong Hongxiang Chemical Fiber Group Co., Ltd., located in Lingxian County, Shandong Province, is the largest geosynthetics company in China. The company is involved in the supply and installation of geosynthetics for key national projects such as the Shanghai-Hangzhou High-speed Rail, the South-to-North Water Transfer Project, the main project of the Beijing Olympics, and the Dunhuang Landfill Site. It is understood that the speed of 416 kilometers per hour on the Shanghai-Hangzhou high-speed rail sliding layer, using the company's development and production of high-tech geomembrane materials, to ensure smooth operation of the train has played a key role. In addition, the company provided 135,000 square meters of synthetic materials such as geotextiles, composite geomembrane, and geogrid to the Beijing Yuanmingyuan Impervious Project. The bentonite waterproof blanket produced by Shanghongxiang Company in the Dunhuang Landfill Project in Gansu Province effectively solved the problem of waste water leakage.

It's more than that. At present, two thirds of cities in China have emerged as a “garbage siege” phenomenon. China has now surpassed the United States as the world's largest solid waste producer. Solid and industrial solid wastes are growing at an annual rate of 8.98%. With the enhancement of human environmental awareness, the issue of solving urban solid waste has been put on the agenda. The basic approach is to reduce, resource and harmless. The construction of domestic garbage landfill is the most effective way to landfill. The use of geosynthetics as an anti-seepage treatment is an inevitable choice.

The author understands that geotechnical and architectural textiles were included in the development plan for the key application areas of industrial textiles in the “Twelfth Five-Year Plan” period, giving it due attention. However, the current existence of extensive and repeated development in this industry and the lack of innovative capabilities will hinder its healthy development and require attention from all parties. Needless to say, as the country continues to increase its infrastructure projects, the market potential that lies in its midst is enormous.

Li Lingshen, President of the China Industrial Textiles Industry Association, pointed out at the 2011 China Geotextile Textile Composites Summit that in the next few years, the country will further increase investment in major infrastructure construction projects such as railways, highways, airports, water conservancy, and environmental protection. The demand for geotextiles in various projects continues to grow and China will become the largest market for geosynthetics in the world.

He believes that at present, the amount of geotextile used in China has exceeded 300 million square meters, and non-woven geotextiles account for about 40% of the total amount of non-woven fabrics. The future market has great potential. “In the next 15 years, geotextiles will continue to be maintained. Two-digit growth, of which the faster growth is PET spunbond filament geotextile,” he said.
