European scientists extract enzymes from fungi to produce environmentally friendly textile dyes

European scientists have developed the use of enzymes secreted by fungi to produce textile dyes. Drainage et al. claimed that the production method is a new and environmentally friendly method.

The production plan is part of the SOPHIED project executed by the European Union for the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. The researchers extracted enzymes from fungi to produce dyes for textiles and leather.

The final dye product combines enzymes with nano-sized silica particles that can stabilize enzymes and break down proteins. The new dye is directly attached to polyamide, wool, or silk fibers, eliminating the need for additional chemicals that can contaminate water and trigger allergies.

One of the main advantages of traditional dyes is washability and abrasion resistance, and bleached garments are not easily discolored by sunlight.

According to initial tests on new environmentally friendly dyes, the color begins to fade only when exposed to sunlight. The researchers suggest that the dye should initially be used in clothing that is limited by sun exposure, such as underwear and socks.
