Australian cotton exports nearly doubled in May from a year earlier

Affected by lower average export costs and seasonal factors, Australian cotton exports reached 83,000 tons in May, a year-on-year increase of 92.1%, the highest monthly level in the past 9 months. Among them, China’s cotton exports increased nearly twice as much as the same period of last year; Indonesia and Japan’s cotton exports were 14,600 tons and 0.34 million tons, respectively, which were the highest in the same period in the past four years; the export volume to Malaysia was 0.24. Ten thousand tons, an increase of about four times year-on-year, setting a record high for the same period in history.

Even so, the cumulative exports of Australian cotton in the current year ending in May were only 283,000 tons, up 2.4% year-on-year, reaching the annual forecast of the US Department of Agriculture’s latest export volume of 609,000 tons, and the next two months’ average cotton export volume was 16.6. Tens of thousands of tons, which is almost twice the amount of exports in May, is therefore more difficult. It is expected that this year's cotton exports will likely be much lower than 609,000 tons.
